PM: Estimated $21bln needed to develop expressways

Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh has said that investment in developing transport infrastructure is a priority task in 2023 and an estimated VND500 trillion ($21 billion) in public investment is needed to develop the expressway network this term.

Addressing a teleconference on January 13 to review activities in 2022 by the Ministry of Transport (MoT) and launch its 2023 tasks, he urged the Ministry to coordinate with relevant ministries and sectors to remove obstacles and mobilize all sources for infrastructure development.

Attention should be paid to key national projects such as the eastern North-South Expressway, Long Thanh International Airport, and projects within the socio-economic recovery and development program, the government leader said.

The transport sector completed and put into operation 22 projects last year. As of December 31, it had disbursed over VND47.9 trillion ($2 billion), or 87 per cent of the plan and higher than the country’s average of over 75 per cent.

This year, MoT will strive to embark on 23 projects, finish 29 others, and disburse over VND94 trillion ($3.9 billion), or at least 90 per cent of the plan assigned by the Prime Minister.
